The focus of this study is to understand the impact of cognitive diagnostic assessment and realistic mathematics education approach on improving students' critical thinking skills. This study applies a quasi-experimental method with a 2 x 2 factorial research design. Grade VII students at SMP Negeri Satap Nunhala are the population and sample in this study. The results of this study indicate that (1) there are differences in critical thinking skills between students who are given cognitive diagnostic assessment (students with high and low initial abilities); (2) there are differences in students' critical thinking skills between students taught with a conventional approach and students taught conventionally; and (3) there is a significant interaction between cognitive diagnostic assessment and learning approach on students' critical thinking skills. Thus, cognitive diagnostic assessment combined with the PMR approach is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills compared to other treatments.
