This research was motivated by students' low understanding of mathematical concepts due to the large amount of information students receive every time they learn mathematics. Therefore, this research aims to determine students' conceptual understanding abilities in terms of information processing theory in the material on building space for 18 class VIII SMP students. The instruments used were concept understanding test questions and interview instruments. The method used is descriptive qualitative with analytical techniques used, namely data collection, data reduction, data study and drawing conclusions. The research results revealed that junior high school students' understanding of concepts was in the low category. Apart from that, the percentage for each element of the information processing process, namely selective attention, was 56%, perception was 69%, long term memory was 33.5%, short term memory was 39% and response was 42%. The conclusion of this research is based on the results of the percentage of high concept understanding indicators, namely stimulus and sensory memory, of 100%. The percentage of this indicator is stated to be high because all 18 students can read, understand and solve the problems found correctly. Meanwhile, the percentage of concept understanding is low, namely long term memory of 33.5%. The percentage of this indicator can be stated as low because students cannot recall the information they have obtained such as multiplication, division of whole numbers, fractions and subtraction of square roots.
