Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the quantitative characteristics of Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus) under different topographical conditions in Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The research was conducted in highland areas including Matangnga, Anreapi, Limboro, Tutar, and Binuang Districts, as well as lowland areas in Tinambung and Binuang Districts. A quantitative descriptive method was applied through interviews with local breeders and direct measurements of Red Junglefowl raised by the community. The observed variables included body weight, chest circumference, shank length, femur length, and beak length. The results showed that Red Junglefowl raised in highland and lowland areas exhibited variation in all observed morphometric traits. Male body weight ranged from 833.65–1096.25 g, while female body weight ranged from 500.80–728.60 g. Male chest circumference ranged from 29.85–32.55 cm and female chest circumference from 24.60–29.20 cm. Male shank length ranged from 58.00–80.50 mm and female shank length from 52.00–71.20 mm. Male femur length ranged from 93.00–102.00 mm and female femur length from 60.40–88.80 mm, while male beak length ranged from 28.65–29.80 mm and female beak length from 21.00–30.44 mm. The coefficient of variation indicated low to moderate variability across all measured traits. In conclusion, topographical conditions influence the quantitative characteristics of Red Junglefowl in Polewali Mandar Regency. These morphometric traits can be used as a basis for phenotypic identification and as supporting information for conservation and genetic resource development of Red Junglefowl.
